With interest in all things Doors-related never waning and a series of lavish anniversary editions released in recent years, Robby guides us through some of his favourite Doors songs.
Jim Morrison: la tragedia greca e il rock
«A volte mi piace vedere la storia del rock’n’roll come l’origine della tragedia greca, che iniziò su piccoli spazi all’aperto nelle stagioni cruciali e all’inizio era un gruppo di fedeli che ballavano e cantavano. Poi, un giorno, una persona posseduta emerse dalla folla e cominciò a imitare un dio». Così si esprimeva Jim Morrison, l’icona del rock americano fra gli anni ’60 e ’70 e leader dei Doors, pensando alla tragedia greca (S. Davie, Author of Hammer of The Gods, London 2004, p. 246). In queste poche frasi egli condensa un parallelo tra due generi letterari e musicali, immaginandone percorsi comuni. La tragedia greca si sviluppò tra sesto e quinto secolo a.C., mentre la musica e gli spettacoli rock dal secondo dopoguerra hanno attraversato le mode musicali e il costume fino ai giorni nostri. Una simile interpretazione dell’origine della tragedia è di estremo interesse, soprattutto perché instaura una comparazione tra due generi apparentemente distanti e diversi. Eppure, il confronto è pertinente, perché molti sono i presupposti comuni.
In primo luogo gli spazi dove nascono sono quasi simili. Si tratta di zone aperte e marginali, agresti per certi versi. Questo significa che entrambi condividono un’origine popolare e periferica, per poi urbanizzarsi e diventare forma di critica e di contestazione.
Jim Morrison: la leggenda, la poesia…
“Crea un varco, crea un varco dall’altra parte”. Quando penso a Jim Morrison, penso a questo varco, al suo invito a squarciare il velo, ad esplorare l’ignoto e, per me, è un invito degno della Poesia più alta che si ricollega a tutta la Letteratura dei primi del Novecento. Vedo il suo modo di porgere le parole, di cercarle, di esprimere i contenuti dei suoi versi e tutto… il suo modo di esibirsi e di cantare è, semplicemente, Poesia. L’insieme di tutti questi fattori era in lui Poesia. Poeta, quindi, voglio definirlo sin da subito così perché è la definizione che lo descrive meglio. Ha anche pubblicato una silloge di poesie, ma non è di questo che voglio parlare. La Poesia era nei testi delle sue canzoni perché lui era un cantante, un musicista, e la musica era uno dei mezzi per comunicare la sua visione poetica.

LOVE STREET - The tragic love story of Jim Morrison
In the year of the 50th anniversary of the debut of The Doors with Elektra Records, Greg Fitch and the Livia Berté will give their interpretation of Jim and Pamela's love story in this new play.
Many writers have spoken about the unbelievable life of "The Lizard King" singer and of the band, that in the 70's broke all the rules of music and law, but this play takes a fresh and unexplored point of view.
The story that Jim had with his red-head Fairy Queen is not well document. We explore a part of this story that makes Jim more human. It influenced him in the same drastic way shamanism did and came to a tragic, romantic ending that needs to be remembered.
Love, shamanism and life on the edge: those are the three basic ingredients of this exciting and captivating new play.

Eight other actors will make the "70's" alive again: Emma Read as Mirandi; Benito Marlay as Ray Manzareck; Greg Fitch as Bill Siddons; Cheryl Prince as Patricia Kennealy; Sara Laratro as Nico; Robert Bingham as John Densmore; Jack Coleby as Robby Krieger; Sarah Evans as the Journalist.
After the show the Underdog will host a 70's party with music, drinks and psychedelic lights. The audience are very welcome to stay after the show and enjoy the free and empowering atmosphere of the hippie days.
